cottage pie


Based on wikipedia, Cottage pie or shepherd's pie is a meat pie with a crust of mashed potato.The term cottage pie is known to have been in use in 1791 when the potato was being introduced as an edible crop affordable for the poor ( "cottage" meaning a modest dwelling for rural workers). In early cookery books, the dish using leftover roasted meat of any kind, and the pie dish was lined with mashed potato as well as having a mashed potato crust on top.
The term "shepherd's pie" did not appear until 1877 and since then it has been used synonymously with "cottage pie", regardless of whether the principal ingredient was beef or mutton.so, its safe to say cottage is for beef and shepherd is for lamb . ok , here we go!

ingredients:
  • 500 gr peeled potatoes, quartered
  • 150 ml milk
  • 50 gr butter, cubed + 1 tbsp for the sauce
  • Salt and ground black pepper
  • 60 gr chopped onion
  • 60 gr chopped carrot
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 300 gr minced beef
  • 300 ml beef stock
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped flat leaf parsley
  • 100 g grated Cheddar Cheese or more
direction:
  1. Boil the potatoes until soft, drain. mash it all. add milk,cheddar cheese and butter. mix it well. step aside.
  2. in a pan, melt 1 tbsp butter ,add the onion and garlic and fry until the fragrance came out, add the carrot and cook for another minute.
  3. Add the ground beef and one quarter of the beef stock to the onion and carrot mixture and cook, stirring constantly until all the meat is browned. Add the remaining stock and parsley
  4. season with salt and pepper. Cover with a lid and cook for 15 minutes.
  5. Place the meat sauce into a ceramic of glass oven proof dish and cover with the mashed potato.
  6. Sprinkle more parsley and bake in the heated oven for 30 - 35 mins until the surface is crisp and browned. 
  7. Serve immediately.
